Ever thought of using Powerpoint for games,
demonstrations and animations? They are not just for
business presentations! The following are a variety
of Powerpoint science resources that can be
used to encourage student participation and visually
illustrating scientific ideas. They work particularly
well with digital projectors or interactive whiteboards.
Visual stimuli using ICT and learning games can be particularly
effective approaches to teaching and learning with many
groups of students.
Who wants to be a Scientist? http://sycd.co.uk/is_there_life/everywhere/quizzes.htm#powerpoint
This quiz could be run during lunch times as an inter-form
competition, or within class time. After you have saved
the PowerPoint quiz to your computer you can customise
the questions if you wish. Each team will need their
three lifeline cards to use once in the game. The game
runs for about 20-30 minutes with four teams. (From
the ASE Science Year CD-ROM).
A moment to learn http://sycd.co.uk/aka_science/front-page/gen-res.htm#amoment
A presentation to start and review the concept of moments,
interactive worksheets including calculations, pupil
support, guidance on how to make your own interactive
worksheets and teacher notes. (From the ASE Science
Year CD-ROM).
Odd one Out! http://www.ase.org.uk/sen/words/odd-one-out.htm
The quiz presents 4 possible answers and the students
have to select the odd one out. This could be used as
a plenary exercise or revision tool. Questions can be
adapted to suit the ability of the group. (From the
ISSEN CD-ROM).
Visually explaining ideas in the classroom
The following 3 examples were created by Tracey Temple,
a teacher who regularly uses them in her teaching for
students with special educational needs. Thanks to Tracy
for sending them in. The text may need to be slightly
adapted for your particular group, but they show the
sort of creative, effective presentations that are possible.
To download the above files to your
hard disk right click on the link, choose "save
target as" and save to hard disk.
Other Powerpoint Resources
The ASE Science Year CD-ROMs had other larger Powerpoint
resources such as Who Lives Here? (from Can we? Should
we?) and Space Station Survival (from Is there Life?).
Information about these can be found on the website
www.sycd.co.uk
