Web based CPD materials have recently been launched,
including video clips, images and interactive materials
to help support teachers in developing a greater understanding
of science for those with special educational needs.
The STRATA materials have been produced by Cambridgeshire
teachers experienced in working with students with special
educational needs in science, as part of the Astra Zeneca
Science Teaching Trust project. The units can be used
in any order either by individual teachers, small groups
of teachers, for whole staff training or for developing
the work of teaching assistants. Even though the activities
may focus on a particular level of pupil, the principles
of good teaching and learning they exemplify are transferable
to all pupils. Materials relating to assessing progress,
attainment, questioning and using vocabulary are included,
with reference to the p scales (pre level one). As with
all Astra Zeneca CPD materials, the activities are to
be made available on a CD-ROM.

STRATA schemes of work
An earlier outcome from the STRATA project were schemes
of work, bringing together science topics and themes,
providing a comprehensive range of activities that are
both age appropriate and sufficient to meet the needs
of the whole ability range for students (the schools
involved included PMLD, SLD, MLD and EBD specialist
environments).
Included in the materials are overall progression grids
to enable teachers to see the development of the skills,
generic to all areas of science. Again, these provide
ideas and materials for teachers in all environments.
The schemes were included on the ISSEN CD-ROM and can
be accessed at

or you can view them directly from the Astra Zeneca
Science Teaching Trust website at http://www.azteachscience.co.uk/code/az/research/cambridgeshire_sen.htm
